Bored at home? Missing those Friday Valhalla nights, hanging out with friends after a long week of work? Fear not for we have something planned for you! ChBE GSA Socials are back with our first major event of the semester, The Virtual Trivia Night!!

When: September 4th (Friday), 6:00 PM (CDT)
Where: At your nearest computer (via Zoom :p)
What’s at Stake: BIG PRIZES…

This will be a social event for the ChBE grad students with a fun online Trivia competition. There will be prizes, BIG PRIZES, and up to $12 reimbursement for ordering food/drinks to your safe place.

You may either choose your own team or ask for a random assignment. This will be a great opportunity to socialize, talk to colleagues that we don’t see for a long time, and meet new people.

The event will have two sections. First, we will do three 7 minute rounds of “blind dates” where the attendants are randomly distributed in breakout rooms to meet new people and try some jokes. Prepare your jokes, you might discover a new talent.

Then, we will have a Trivia competition with five rounds of questions for each team to discuss and get to the final answers TOGETHER. There will be prizes for the best teams. Trust me, GREAT PRIZES! This year’s ChBE GSA Seminar series looked to help answer the question on every graduate student’s mind: “what should I do when I graduate”? This three-part seminar series hashed out the differences between working in industry, academia, and even start ups.

FitR Part I: The Industry Track

Changsheng (Charles) Xiang, a Chemistry alumnus from the Tour group, discussed his first year working for Schlumberger and what his recent transition from industry to academia had been like.

FitR Part II: The Academia Track

This discussion featured a Post-Doc Panel composed of Dr. Christopher DeSaintis (Chemistry, Halas lab) and Dr. Laurent Maillaud (ChBE, Pasquali lab)

FitR Part III: Entrepreneurship

“Erlich, who graduated from Rice in 2000 with B.S. degrees in computer science (CS) and electrical and computer engineering (ECE), returned to campus April 23 to give a talk on entrepreneurship.”     http://engineering.rice.edu/yandaerlich/

Happy holidays! The Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department and ChBE GSA would like to invite you to the ChBE Holiday Dinner, on Thursday, December 18th, at 6:00 pm in the Duncan Hall atrium. We will have great food, drinks, wine, and desserts!

Faculty, staff, graduate students, and their families are welcome to come. Please RSVP by filling out the Google form you received via e-mail by Wednesday, December 10th if you plan to come! The form will also ask for guests’ names, and first author publications in 2014 for awards.

As usual, we will also have a dessert potluck to end the meal, so bring your favorite dessert to share!
